I opened my eyes in the classroom and cast a glance at Aidan. As I expected, his gaze was anchored on me. I gave him a smile of triumph and stood up, ready to go.

“Wait,” Farro whispered when I was passing by, but I didn’t listen to him.

He didn’t try to stop me, though. Maybe, he was still concentrated on keeping the illusion stable, because my classmates were there.

I left the room and headed to the principal’s office. Now I was ready to a new conversation with Mr. Stockson. During the way there, I was supposed to stop several times. The sudden waking out of the trance made me feel weak and dizzy.

When I reached the office, I ignored Finch and went right to the principal.

Mr. Stockson looked at me in surprise. But his gaze darkened as he recognized me, “Sparks, how dare you to break into my office without my permission?!”

“Mr. Stockson,” I interrupted him, taking a seat in front of him. “I know that Aidan Farro killed Betsy and I can prove that. You’ll have to listen to me.”

Stockson’s face looked like a cold lifeless stone, but he didn’t stop me.

“That night I was with Betsy in the club, and I saw Aidan there. We were about to leave. But Betsy didn’t listen to me and stayed. When I was leaving the club, she was with Aidan.”

Mr. Stockson was going to interrupt me, but I didn’t give him the chance to put a word in.

“Lately I’ve been following him. After the funeral, he became a changed man. Farro began to play a role of a normal, responsible teacher. But I noticed that sometimes he leaves the school. Moreover, he does it on the sly. He escapes through a secret passageway under the chapel. I’m sure, you know about its existence.”

“Evelyn,” the principal breathed out.

“Mr. Stockson, as I said before, I saw Aidan has the same strange sign on his neck as Betsy had. And today I had a chance to distill his secrets,” I looked at the principal, who finally gave up trying to interrupt me. “Farro set up a training ground for us in his mind. As he said, he wanted to give us the opportunity to fight with real vampires. We drank the connecting potion and soon found ourselves in the illusory decoration with vampires. But I managed to leave the illusion and get into Aidan’s real memories.”

“And what did you see there?” the principal asked emotionless.

I shuddered at the memory of the scene in the basement.

“First, everything was fine. It was Farro’s estate in Ireland. But then Aidan noticed me and began to destroy the memory. At the last moment, I found myself in the basement full of water. There were bodies of people drifting around me,” I shook my head, trying to get the picture out of my mind. “And among them, I saw a girl with the ‘F’ on her neck.”

“Oh, Saint Marc,” the principal murmured, pinching the bridge of the nose. “Digging into his soul… How did it come to your mind?”
